NEWCASTLE BUILDING SOCIETY CHOOSES LOCAL FIRMS TO DESIGN & BUILD NEW FLAGSHIP BRANCH

Newcastle Building Society has continued its policy of investing in its heartland community by choosing a raft of companies from across the region to design and build its new flagship branch.

The new Northumberland Street branch will serve as the Newcastle’s main branch presence in its home city when it opens in the spring, improving the range and accessibility of services to members in its heartland.

City-based architect practice MWE was appointed to oversee the design and provide architectural services, with STP Construction Ltd of Rowlands Gill acting as principal contractor.

Gateshead-based Ronald Thompson Ltd is responsible for the electrical and data installations, with the Team Valley depot of ADT Fire and Security installing the security systems, alongside Graham Technical Services of North Shields.

Heating and ventilation specialists HLA Services Ltd of Boldon is installing the branch’s air conditioning systems, Escott Signs Ltd of Gateshead is proving all its signage and marketing displays and Normans of Billingham is supplying all the office furnishings.

The new flagship branch will encompass a customer area of more than 2,000 sq ft over two floors, and will offer customers direct access to a larger branch with more staff and financial advisers than any other of its 36 current branches in the UK and Gibraltar.  Construction work is well underway, and is scheduled to take a total of approximately xx weeks.

Kevin Parker, property services manager at the Newcastle, says: “The Northumberland Street branch will set the standard for us over the coming years, and we conducted an exhaustive tender process to ensure we got the best possible firms to design and build it.

“Awarding the contracts to firms based in our heartland and thus investing even more in our communities reflects the mutual ethos the Newcastle values so highly. We’re already looking forward to being able to showcase the excellent work our contractors are carrying out when the flagship branch opens.”

Barry Mason, Director at MWE Architects with responsibility for the project, adds: “We are privileged to work on this completely new conceptual design for the Newcastle, which has been based on ‘the customer journey’ and which will form a basis for branch designs in the future."
