Newcastle Building Society Backs Chinese Community Initiative

A group which runs a wide range of activities for members of the region’s Chinese community has folded – all in the name of an ancient Oriental art form.

Ten members of the Newcastle-based Chinese Healthy Living Centre have been taking part in a special origami session, thanks to a grant from Newcastle Building Society.

Originally founded ten years ago, the Chinese Healthy Living Centre is run almost entirely by volunteers, and is regularly accessed by more than 100 people from age 18 up to 70 and beyond.

Based on Stowell Street in the heart of Newcastle’s Chinatown, it aims to provide different opportunities for local Chinese people to come together and enjoy activities such as tai chi, dancing and singing classes, as well as offering information and advice on health, welfare and lifestyle issues.

The results of the origami session was the inspiration behind a recent MaximISA poster campaign run by the Newcastle across its branch network which offers a unique service which offers a unique service which allows ISA customers to take advantage of their increased allowance and spread their money across more than one cash ISA product.

Centre co-ordinator Annie Ho says: “Our Centre offers a wide variety of events and activities to a similarly diverse range of people, but the aim at the heart of everything we do is to strengthen relationships across the community and to include as many members of it in what we undertake.

“The origami session proved very enjoyable for all our participants, and we’re very grateful to the Newcastle for the support that they have given to us, which will contribute to the cost of many of our projects.”

Donna Murray, from the Newcastle’s CSR team adds: “The Centre creates a real sense of belonging amongst all its users, and we’re very pleased to be able to support such a worthwhile project in the centre of our home city.”

Newcastle Building Society and its members support many charities and worthwhile causes across the region every year and has to date donated in excess of £800,000 to more than 800 local causes.
